Prestigious Asko Avonius Award 2015 has been given to the inventor of Graphic Concrete, interior architect (MA) Samuli Naamanka. The award winner was announced today 1. September at Lahti Sibelius Festival. The jury based its decision on Naamanka's exceptionally wide-ranging skills and keen interest in different ways of living, scales and materials which have lead to individual and ground-breaking results ranging from patented manufacturing processes of graphic concrete to lamps, and from architectural projects to bio-degradable chairs. The creative exploitation of technical innovations combined with a very well-considered design language have assured Naamanka a distinguished place among designers both nationally and internationally. He is therefore considered as an exceptional exponent of the Asko Foundation’s objectives.
Naamanka's production is presented at L3 Design Dock exhibition "Art & Industry" which opens on 9th September. The exhibition is part of Helsinki Design Week events. Objects on show include for example Graphic Concrete -patterned fibre concrete which represents the new era of concrete builduing. It offers a great solution especially for building renovation. Fibre concrete manufactured by Czech precaster Polycon combines the durability and robust looks of traditional concrete with very thin panel thickness reached through the use of glass fibres.
